My memories drift back to 68th Rd and hoping for the 'Ice man' to cometh. He have a push cart (remember them?) with a large block of ice covered with a cloth. Clean or not can be discussed some other time 
. Anyway, you ordered a cup of a flavored juice he had in glass bottles with a spout. He had orange, cherry, strawberry etc etc. He'd use a scrapper on the block of ice, put the scrappings into the cup and then pour the syrup onto the ice. Presto, a cool and refreshing 'Italian ice', home made you could say. A nickle.
