Oh yes, peach ice cream - ours was from Wolke's on 90th Street at Roosevelt Avenue. And lemonade served n a big glass pitcher that had a fruit design on it in bright primary colors - it was our "summer" pitcher, and never saw the light of day before the Memorial Day or after Labor Day - kind of like white shoes and straw hats that way.
Kids would sit on the back stoop, and adults would congregate in front of the garage on lawn chairs around my little inflatable wading pool, solving all the world's problems while they cooled their feet. If there were only a couple of kids, we'd sit on the big wooden lawn glider, comfy among the old chintz cushions.
We had an assortment of box fans that fit in the windows and oscillating fans that sat on top of dressers and blew across bowls of ice. In later years my parents bought a couple of those enormous, clunky, evaporative air coolers - one for the living room and one for their room. My room was right off the living room, and if I kept my door open it felt comparatively cool.
If worse came to worst on those impossibly hot nights when nothing seemed to help, there was always the trip to the kitchen for a glass of ice water - more an excuse to open the old refrigerator and stand there in the coolness for a minute than anything else.
