The warm nights of Summer recall to mind the true sign that it was Summer. Dad would go up to Kedenburgs Ice Cream Parlor on Fresh Pond Rd. and return with a quart of Peach ice cream! Summer time is the only time we ate it. Sitting on da stoop, under the awning, it was so refreshing in those pre air conditioned rooms days. Thus fortified we would go back into the railroad rooms and prepare for bed. A small oscillating fan providing air movement. We thought that fan was luxurious.
Summer fare also brought out the ever favorite Cream Sicles, Fudge Sicles, Double Sicles etc. These we usually bought at Arferts Drug Store on 60th Lane and Catalpa Ave. Those pops had offers if you saved so many of the polka dotted wrappers. The sticks we would save and weave into rafts, to be sailed along the curb when a downpour happened.
Arferts also had the Dixie Cups with a picture of a star or cowboy hero under the lid. In addition they sold the Mello Roll ice creams that were cylindrical in shape, wrapped in cardboard and to be mated with a specially shaped cone that could accomadate the cylinder of ice cream. I only seem to remember Vanilla being offered.
Simple pleasures of gentler days.
