Elmhurst/Jackson Heights was a LOT like Ridgewood as far as the neighborhood shopping was concerned, remember? There was a very small A&P on Roosevelt Avenue (wooden floors, and coffee grinders at the checkouts), and that was where we ALL shopped until the Key Food store opened up further east on Roosevelt. And the bakeries!! - Shelley's on Roosevelt and about 83rd Street, Cushman's on Roosevelt and about 90th Street (right near Wolke's ice cream parlor - don't get me started about Wolke's!!), Baur's German Bakery on about 81st Street and 37th Avenue, and a bagel bakery right around the corner from Baur's. If you didn't want to go to the City to shop, there was the block of 82nd Street between Roosevelt Avenue and 37th Avenue - Clark's and Fields' had clothing that was every bit as nice and almost as upscale as the department stores in the City, and that block was shoe store heaven!
We have a bit of that feeling in the center where our office is located - it's a block long on both sides of the street, and there are smaller apendages on the boulevard at the end of the block. We're mostly Mom'n'Pop small businesses - and there's a tremendous amount of customer loyalty from the locals (thank God!).
