You weren't hurt - that's the really important part.
Here in Florida, if the cost to repair damage from an accident is 80% or more of the vehicle's book value, by law it must be considered totalled. Unfortunately when a vehicle is older but in good shape, as yours was, that means it's totalled more often than not. We had the same situation with a beloved Jeep Cherokee a few years ago. It was older but we had kept it in really good shape, and could easily have gotten another 150,000 or more miles out of it ... but it got hit, very hard indeed, from behind, and because of its age (it was a '93 and the accident occurred in 2004) it was totalled. We got a check for the arbitrary book value - we weren't happy, but it was, and remains, the law. What're ya gonna do?!
