So cool - I was going through a box of old stuff that I had overlooked forever - obviously - and found my great-grandfather's citizenship declaration/certificate!! It's one of those oversized, elaborate documents with curlicued writing and big, red seals - dated June 22, 1900. He had already been in this country for some years, because my grandmother was born in Schenectady in 1897.
A couple of years ago I had found some sort of even more elaborate certificate/document that he got when he was still in Italy and brought with him when he emigrated - looks like an induction into a local militia in Torino, but my Italian isn't good enough to be sure. It's dated (this much I have no trouble translating) July 3, 1889, when he would have been 20. I had it archivally matted and framed, and I'm going to do the same with the newly discovered citizenship document.
Eventually each of my sons will be able to inherit a nice piece of family heritage ... but I intend to enjoy them myself for at least several more decades before that happens, of course.
