As a person who suffers with Major Depression Disorder, thus stigmatized as being Mentally Ill, I find the media portrayal of persons such as myself horrendous. I am not any more prone to violence than a person who does not suffer from such an illness. If I were to identify my illness to co-workers I am sure that I would be viewed as not being as competent and probably emotionally unstable. When I hear people say things such as "You don't know what those crazy people will do", I hurt. I hurt for myself and for those who suffer worse than I do. What can we do to stop this "madness"? Is education the answer? Or can we boycott those media that continue to portray persons with Mental Illness as being evil/unpredictable/unstable and generally to be avoided?
