I think this website is very important and very well done. The stigma attached to those with mental illness is something that must be dealt with. People must be educated, especially the media. My son's case is just one of many, and the true facts are not really out there. Gary, also known as Gidone Busch was called out of his one room basment apartment on August 30, 1999 by the police in response to a call about a disturbance. At this time, Gary was davening (praying), as he always did before dinner being religious, wearing a prayer shawl, tefilin (worn for prayer) and holding a small light religiously adorned hammer. He had plans to attend a wedding that evening with his girlfriend. As he stood in in the small stairwell in front of his doorway, the police leaned over the railing and sprayed him directly in the eyes with pepper spray. He blindly tried to find his way up the narrow steps past the officers on the steps and above, screaming in pain and fear, unable to see or breath. He got to the driveway a distance from the stairwell, and just stood there holding this small hammer symbolically, his back close to a low wall of the adjacent building. Six or more officers followed and formed an arc around him crouched down in firing position with guns drawn, the closest 6 feet away the others much further away. No offficer was on the ground or in harms way. Suddenly, without justification, there was a shot, a short pause and a volley of shots, 12 hitting him all over, including his arms and legs. Numerous eyewitnesses said Gary posed no threat either before or when they shot him. They called it an execution. Neighbors children and grandchildren were listening to music he was playing earlier that day. False stories were released that he was killed while attacking a Sergeant, in spite of the eyewitness accounts to the contrary. The cover-up began immediately. The victim is always made out to be the aggressor in order to justify these shootings. He finished computer courses with a 3.9 GPA just 8 months before, and a book of poetry 5 1/2 weeks before he was killed. I hope that this will all help to educate those who are not informed.
