Hello Dwayne,
My name is rand and have chronic major depression and I can say I know the feeling when people start talking negatively aboout people with mental illness. I do have to believe that the stigma can be over come besides education, people with mental illnes have to start changing the way we have been taught to think because of the illness start taking back the responsibility that was taken and given up because we were told we were not able to have or compitent enough to have this responsibility and from there we can educate people arou7nd us and the system that is set up to, supposedly, help us and the general public
: As a person who suffers with Major Depression
: Disorder, thus stigmatized as being
: Mentally Ill, I find the media portrayal
: of persons such as myself horrendous. I am
: not any more prone to violence than a
: person who does not suffer from such an
: illness. If I were to identify my illness
: to co-workers I am sure that I would be
: viewed as not being as competent and
: probably emotionally unstable. When I hear
: people say things such as "You don't
: know what those crazy people will
: do", I hurt. I hurt for myself and
: for those who suffer worse than I do. What
: can we do to stop this
: "madness"? Is education the
: answer? Or can we boycott those media that
: continue to portray persons with Mental
: Illness as being
: evil/unpredictable/unstable and generally
: to be avoided?
