I have seldom time for reading, but when I do take a book or magazine to bed it is usually something to do with metal detecting or coin collecting.
Last night I got into bed with an American magazine called Western & Eastern Treasures of September 2004.
When I read these old back copies I always search for names of friends that I have met during one of my detecting trips or on some of the detecting forums on the WWW.
My eye fell on an interesting article written by Amy Maruso entitled “Mystery and Magic” about detecting a yard of an old homestead …”families come and go, leaving remnants of their occupation behind like clues to a tantalizing puzzle.”
The heading of the article …

She then describes how she found a button with the lettering around the rim revealing the adage “God help those that help themselves” …she continues …”I knew the phrase was attributed to Benjamin Franklin, but what was it doing on the face of the button?"
A picture of the button…

Then the rest made me smile as I knew the guy personally …

Yep, the guy she was referring to (John Hawkins) is FrontierWest that hunted with Jim from New York with us here in SA.
What a small world!
