William Gillette met Helen during a Detroit performance of The Professor in 1882. He had been dating an actress named Georgia Cayvan, but dated Helen after breaking off from Cayvan. Helen was the most precious young woman a man could hope for, a darling young lady loved and instantly taken in by his entire family. They adored each other. She traveled with him most of the time and they lived an idyllic married life. They had no children, however, and she died in 1888 from a burst appendix, there not yet being any way to treat that (the first appendectomy would not be performed for several more years). He was terribly, terribly broken up by her death, soon took sick with TB and tubercular ileitis, and never married again. My full length biography of Gillette will be published soon by the Tryon Publishing Company. It should have been out this or next month, but the hurricanes have interrupted the delivery of printing supplies to the printer. It will be out soon, however.
