I am trying to find the origins of my grandfather Robert Mortimer Gillett who was put, as an infant, in a children's home in Sidcup, Kent, England, about 1900. He was told , in later years, that this was his real name, but that he would not be able to obtain a birth certificate. My mother ( and I ) wonder if there is any link to the clockmaker Mortimer Gillett, but haven't got any information in this direction, except that we've seen clocks bearing this name.
I suppose it's possible that he was the illegitimate son of a Robert Mortimer and a Miss Gillett, but I haven't got anywhere with that yet, either. In the unlikely event that you know of anything remotely relevant I would be very pleased to hear from you.
