It goes all the back to French Revolutionary War.
According to legend a French General asked the English General why he sat in a red couch and wore a red uniform rather than brown. The English General said in case he saw an enemy approching and were hit by a bullet his men wouldn't see the blood and flee in panic. The French General scratched his head and said " I see". Every since then brown sofas and chairs became the fashion. Its a French thing.
