What was the big chain store you were shopping? That does seem odd, but I have a theory or two.
When I was still selling and then later managing a showroom at a large retailer, 99% of the time we knew the manufacturer. However, the man who owned the company did a lot of shopping for price point furniture in China. This furniture often came in shipped from a very small furniture factory. In fact, there were times that the factory made ONLY that one piece. These small factories were often labeled under one umbrella name that the store chain. Perhaps the big store you are shopping does something similar and then does not share the information with the sales staff (trust me, they really are in the dark sometimes as wrong as that seems).
If you get a chance, you can email me with the name of the chain and I will see if any of my contacts in the industry can tell me (and in turn you) which manufacturers are being represented or if there is an umbrella name being used for imports.
I know that is a long answer, but I hope it was at least somewhat helpful.
