I agree with you to a degree. The problem is that you are going to have a tough time finding a store that will deliver unpaid goods. To boil down your suggestion, though, I would recommend avoiding delivery when you can.
As buyer mentioned, you will avoid many of the pitfalls in furniture shopping. Additionally, you will see what you are getting, take possesion right away, and be able to make exchanges on the spot.
If you are going to need deliver, though, odds are that you will end up having to pay up front (if you find a place, though, that will let you pay at deliver, then let us know!). In that case, just make sure you do as much research as possible on the store. Know who you are working with and know their policies.
