Yes, those are single-axle bogies under each end of the segments. Look where they later wound up! This was one of two such prototype articulated multi-level auto carriers built for Southern by GSC, right here in Greenville.
These look quite a bit like the bearing and suspension arrangements on the contemporary GE 'roller blade' locomotive trucks:
