At first I was thinking that maybe the hood side doors on 830 were just put on in a different (wrong) order after a major overhaul at some point. I believe those doors, when open, could be easily removed by a quick release latch on the hinge side.

However, even in her twilight in 1998, they were the same, and on BOTH sides. Interesting.

Also,

840 has the similar stenciling on her long hood here in 1978, which is separate from where the leasing stenciling was located prior to her being owned. That points even more toward it being maintenance related.
