Makes sense Todd, even at the height of BLE diesel age the line just wasn’t big enough to justify two manufactures of power. I would say if some of the line expansion rumors were to come true and Albion or another point became a second major or heavy shop then you could split EMD at one and GE at another much like the class 1s do. I am a huge fan of the SD38 and I still think it’s the best sounding loco ever made, yes even more than an Alco or old GE. Now strictly speculation but if GE would have been a major player in the mid 1950s as the BLE was switching over to diesel they could have had an advantage over EMD with being able to basically deliver new units right to Erie and with sales and support only 2-3hrs away (pre I79). It’s fun to imagine what could have been….
