I work on a railroad here in Pgh that is considered an industrial switching railroad and all of our locomotives have ditchlights on them. All it takes is an engineer that shouold be paying attention anyways to shut off the lights when there is someone making a hose.
One of the engines has a switch so when the reverser bar is moved from forward to reverse, the lights change with it. I couldn't understand why the URR never had ditchlights, even when I worked there, I never thought they would cause to much trouble.
They di have M of W that works on the tracks as well, ditch lights arn't just for crossings.
