While this is all well and good, and safety safety safety is the most important thing today other than air itself, it still doesn't solve the basic problem:
You can't fix stupid.
Perhaps a more practical solution would be to make the first and last car in each train to be made entirely of Styrofoam and nerf. That way when some sped is trying to play checkers on a grade crossing, and doesn't notice the ground vibrating, doesn't hear the soft 145dB air horns, doesn't hear the bell, doesn't notice the flashing crossing lights, doesn't notice the moving gates, doesn't notice Ronald McDonald on wheels moving towards them, doesn't notice the flashing headlight, doesn't notice the yellow strobe light, it will gently bump them out of the way. Maybe as an option it could clone them or offer surrogate parenting services so their defective genes can be passed on to further decrease the average IQ of the public.
It's *just* a thought...
