The second life blood of the Bessemer during her glory days as we all know was coal. With a decline in steel production and environmental regulations the market for the coal mined along the B&LE and through out the extreme Western PA region vanished in what seems an over night move. As I travel through out the state working with many small railroads I notice that not too far east coal continues to move by rail, Rosebud just re opened the Bigler cleaning and loading facility for a new customer. EXPORT COAL. Why was the coal along the B&LE and through out this region never shopped to the Asian export market. Korea now added to the list of PA coal buyers is taking two 130 car trains a month from the Clearfield area. With rail service and interchanges with NS that loads in Baltimore I would think the local coal could have a market in Asia. Please explain to me why this never came to fruition.
Thanks,
Bob
