The point I meant to stress was that all the reigning European monarchies, save one, are SECULAR institutions -- so religious marriages are not required for unions to be dynastic. Civil marriages will suffice to legalize a union in the eyes of the state, and in fact that is the only requirement for a union to be dynastic, after the sovereign/Parliament grants consent.
As it is, both the US and the UK will allow a couple to undergo either a civil or religious wedding, to have their union recognized by the state. But in the good part of continental Europe, the civil marriage is REQUIRED BY LAW, meaning that a religious weddin will not suffice.
