I wonder if the humour is just inherited from prince Claus. It was said that prince Hendrik was quite some humorous man as well. And Juliana could be fun as well. (I wouldn't know about Beatrix because we never heard her making jokes. I am 100% sure she can be funny too.)
But you are right prince Claus also had this tongue in cheek (is that English or German? 
) humour. Playing with one or two words only. Willem-Alexander has this habit that he is the first one to laugh at his own jokes.)
