When abroad HM mostly delvers her speeches in English (occasionally in Dutch (Belgium), German (Germany) or French (France). But never Italian in Italy or Spanish in Spain/South America. Imho she should always speak Dutch at the state banquets but I think that HM finds that the message comes across immediately. Reading a translation (hardcopy) is not direct enough. I think HM should promote the Dutch language, not known to many (especially the sounds of it). Some Dutch people will not agree with me: getting the message clear straightaway is of greater importance to them.
I guess the Scandinavian monarch face the same problem. Danish Queen will not easily deliver a speech in Danish in f.i. Italy of France. Whereas an Italian or French president will deliver their speeches in their own languages. National pride indeed.
