In the months ahead of the engagement to Mathilde several royal mags (a.o. "Point de Vue") had been publishing reports & pics of possible future brides. Some reports (incl. pics & interviews with the possible brides) were rather serious.
So, since Philippe was romantically involved I would certainly not say he was in a depression
