The Princess attended the hand-out of the von der Gablentz Prize to Rita Süsmuth,former Chair of the Bundestag,
the german parliament.Amsterdam,november 1st.
Otto von der Gablentz was a german diplomat,ambassador to The Netherlands from 1980 till 1987 and all were immediatly taken by this man who had learned to speak excellent dutch before he took up his post.He became a familiar figure,and a much respected and loved one as he tryed and cleared the void between the two countries in regard to the recent past,WWII.
In the proces he became a warm and dear friend of the Royal Family.
After his post here he went on and became the ambassador of Germany to Israel and Moscow,not the easyest posts.
After his retirement he and his wife settled down here,in Amsterdam.Otto von der Gablentz passed away in 2007 after a long illness.
