What about Maria Walpole, who on 1766 married Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and brother of King George III? The King was not pleased with the marriage, but it was completely legal at the time (before the Royal Marriages Act).

: What about Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923? She
: was not marrying the heir, but as you say,
: he was a royal member in line to the throne.
: She was from the nobility, but technically
: non-royal.
:
: If we go back even further in the British
: Royal family there is the Marquess of Lorne
: who married Queen Victoria's daughter
: Princess Louise in March 1848. Again not
: marrying an heir, but a member of the then
: royal family. Again nobility, he became the
: Duke of Argyll, but technically non-royal.
