I always had the impression that Dutch Pieter van Vollenhoven was the first commoner marrying into a reigning royal family but I guess it must have been "girl nextdoor" (daughter of a well-to-do businessman) Michiko marrying the Imperial Crown Prince of Japan (soon celebrating her 75th birthday) back in 1959.
Was she or who is the very first commoner marrying a royal member in line to the throne?
And again Empress Michiko and Princess Lilian are by coincidence my two very favourite global royals... In terms of class, style and dignity. Dignified representatives of their respective monarchies.
