It is also simply the public becoming dumb and dumber, a phenomenon which is helped by the headlines-culture of the free media. Short, shorter, shortest.
For an example, an awful lot of people thinks that we pay all these Oranges they see waving at Queen's Day. Or that the taxpayer has paid for De Eikenhorst in Wassenaar. The negative reactions on the racing of two Van Vollenhovens was -seeing the online vomiting and insulting- because of the idea that they do these expensive hobbies thanks to the taxpayers feeding their bill.
That these Van Vollenhovens actually do earn their own money and finance their own hobbies is not something the great public seems aware of. (For me these hobbies are extremely irritating because at one side the royal family is advocating sustainable development but at the other side these guys race in petrol-swallowing cars, pressing their already huge carbon footprints even more deeper in Mother Earth).
It is very well possible that the advisors of the princely couple did advise against the Machangulo project. But it is also very well possible that the Prince wanted to go on. Or the Princess. No one speaks about it, but it is also possible that Willem-Alexander was willing to give in but that Máxima urged him to remain on his stance and continue the project. We know nothing about it all.
The Queen and the royal family do have excellent advisors. The best lawyers' offices, the best investment bankers. That no one saw a problem with establishing private funds at Noordeinde Palace will have to do with a blind spot and the not-realizing that every private fart is public in these days.
