The simple fact that Bernhard is a Van Oranje makes me mention this on this Benelux royals board.
BTW I work/live 30% per week in Amsterdam still, so there is no lack of information on my part.
All negativism is often seen as "hypes" these days. Especially by those who do not agree... and who read all news too eagerly all day long. The man on the street would shrug shoulders I suppose. Or become angry about some peculiar royal privileges they weren't even aware of. Sensible question: why would the Prince of Orange and his wife be allowed to fly privately without paying? Give me one reason... Security reasons? Can be taken care of in paid flights as well. All other VIPs fly from A to B privately whilst paying their own ticket/airplane.
I find John's (a critical friend of the monarchy) observation more spot on than you chosing to ignore upheaval caused by the RF themselves. "Hyped" or not. This is an unfortunate period for the Dutch royals. It may pass, yes, like everything passes - panta rhei - but it cannot be ignored. Reassessment on the part of the Court and all involved of all the monarchy/Van Oranje family related incidents during the recent months is necessary to face the future. Things should be avoided as much as possible to keep the monarchy out of the spotlight. P.M. could for instance explain exactly why private flights should be free for PoO and Máxima. What he does is just telling us. The ongoing discussion among MPs about the trio who is allowed to fly free privately was mentioned in RTL4 news yesterday.
Many things the Dutch royals do or do not is put under a looking glass because of their special position in Dutch society, whether they want it or not. Abolishing the monarchy would be the only way out for the family into TRUE anonimity/"normality" they seem to wish so much... (although in the 2nd Dutch Republic there still would be staunch Orangists (perhaps even a monarchist political party) that would like to see the Oranges back on the throne...
) The Van Oranjes have a special unique responsibility, that is: to behave.
P.S. No rumours are sheard about brother Prince Pieter-Christiaan as a car driver btw, so it's not just the name "Van Oranje" which causes press attention. The two brothers often got positive press as racing car drivers for years, something which you never found a "hype".
