and says to ALL: *a member of the charcoal-makers caste had come by, delivering about 7 stone of his irregular coals, for the use of a girl and some fresh vegetables from the garden in the Lair. the charcoal was somewhat of a luxury, when he had it, as as the even, smoky head cooked meat and vegetables better than open flame*

and says to ALL: *I hud dug a shallow pit, less than the depth from my foot to my knee, then used a sharpened stick to drill holes at a 60 degree angle through the dirt to the bottom of the pit, for ventilation. I'd made the pit just a bit smaller than a steel grill we had taken from a male hunter. a dozen starter coals had been heated in a separate wood fire, and now I added them to the pile of cold charcoals I had arranged in the pit. it would take about an ahn for the coals to be gray-hot and ready to cook over*

and says to ALL: *we had about 5 stone of ground tabuk, and some tenderloin. we'd grill the burgers first when the fire was hot, and slow-cook the tenderloins when the coals had cooled. the greasy burger would smoke like hell when it cooked, and sometimes drew traders, or on rare occaisions, a foolish hunter. but generally, these cookouts turned into something festive. as the coals heated, I had casha and tuka scraping the grill clean of old, burnt grease, using wire brushes and lamp-oil*

and says to ALL: *some of the women had made kabobs, with veggies or veggies and chunks of meat. we also had sausages, made with spiced ground meat wrapped in tabuk intestines. we'd cook these last, and they would stay good longer. we'd feast on burger patties on flatbread tonight, eat the sliced tenderloin tomorrow, and the suasages would stay good for another day or two, maybe more*
