: Even though our hunting proved fruitless, the incident left us in excellent spirits when we made it back to the Citadel. The patrol leader went off to make his report and the rest of us grabbed a meal then sat around cleaning our kit and talking. I had been reflecting on the panther, what would make a woman leave home for life in the jungle, a pretty primitive life, constant danger and hardship. I was certain that many would not even make it to the jungles and many who did would not survive the dangers. In my time I had seen a lot of places, burned down many of them but nothing that explained what drove these women from the life they knew

: I asked the man next to me a grizzled veteran who had been here for years. He nodded, he had found the bodies of women in the jungle, killed by animals, eaten something poisonous, dead from a fight with a rival or from trying to capture a mercenary and making a mistake, for all that, he had seen new ones coming to the Citadel to trade, had no idea how many there might be in the jungle. He laughed aloud and remarked that there were plenty of women in the Citadel wearing its collar and when we came back from our next fight there would likely be more, we have what we need and if the panthers don't trouble us, why should we bother about them?

: I couldn't fault his logic though I knew the question was going to nag at me. Strange that meeting a woman could begin to undermine some of my fundamental beliefs. I shook my head to clear it, much more of this and I'll be off to become an Initiate. I stood and picked up a practise spear, calling out for someone to come and get a bruising
