: I stood on the beach and signaled to the boat riding at anchor out on the water. Within a few minutes a row boat had been put in the water and was drawing towards me. The mercenaries who had accompanied me from the Citadel stood further back along the beach. When the boat was close enough I waded out into the water, taking care not to get the folded sheets of parchment tucked inside my tunic wet, I had laboured well into the night writing that message and had no desire to do it again

: I alone boarded the rowboat and was taken back to the ship. I informed the Captain that I had achieved what I had come here to do and would not be returning with him. I gave the parchment into his hands to pass on to Schaeffer’s family. They would not be pleased with its contents but they had to have known in their hearts that it was the news they were going to hear

: I had written of his death, courageously, weapon in hand, against superior numbers, that I had seen where he lay buried, honoured for his bravery, beside the bodies of the panthers he had taken with him to the Cities of Dust, that a ring with the crest of his family had been taken as a trophy from the body, making the identification conclusive. I did not tell them that I had seen the ring and left it in the possession of the woman who had taken it, along with his life. What seemed fitting to a warrior was often distressing to those who adhered to softer codes

: My wording of the message had taken liberties with the site of his death and location of his death, locating it further along the coast and deep inland. I didn’t think they would be foolish enough to seek vengeance but if they were let them seek it elsewhere. I was not sure what they had expected or why they had gone to such efforts to recover him, as far as I could tell, he met the ending he deserved

: The Captain was inclined to argue about unloading the trade goods I had brought but they were nothing to do with him, he was merely being paid to transport them for me and I told him he could collect the balance of my fee when he delivered the message. That, together with my hand on my sword convinced him to instruct his crew to place the goods in two boats and ferry them to the beach where the mercenaries were waiting

: I accompanied the second boat, bringing the few personal items I had left on the ship, helping the crew to empty the boat before returning to the ship. I didn’t look back as the boats were drawn up and the ship prepared to weigh anchor. The mercs and I divided up the bundles of trade goods, weapons, food, medical supplies, clothing and blankets, they would do as the price of my admission to their company until I proved myself in combat

: Before leaving the beach, we left several packages behind, knives, spear heads, hand axes, sewing needles, flour, sugar, a miscellany of stuff. Medicine Deer had given me the information I had sought, I was keeping my part of the deal. We had heard calls from the forest and knew that panthers were watching, they would collect their share of the goods when they were sure we were well clear

: The men accompanying me knew their way back to the Citadel and there were enough of us that not all had to help carry the goods, some would have their hands free to use their weapons if necessary, a precaution they were far too experienced to neglect. My mind was busy processing the recent change in my fortunes, I had left nothing behind me that I would miss and I didn’t regret my decision to make a new life here - but did it have to be so damn humid!!!
