: ...I put away the thoughts of the girl, and other matters, and concentrate on a task that I need to do. Mirage had flown away with my wooden flute a few hands ago, and had not brought it back. I had cursed myself for leaving it out in front of my hut, Mirage had a tendency to steal things that attracted her attention, and carry them off to the Jungle. I figure that she must have made a nest somewhere, but I had never been able to find it. Mirage clearly wanted to have some place all to her own, that she would not even let me invade.

: ...The sounds of the Jungle fill me, and I stay alert, feeling the warmth of the Gorean sun fill my limbs with energy. My bronze colored skin glows with health, and I shake my head back, letting my pigtails fall over my shoulders. I take the first path that heads to the right that I encounter, and then start taking more care as I walk. The floor of the path is mostly soft loam, made by years of rotting folage, but there are a few spots where rocks and bare dirt appear. I try to step on areas that won't leave tracks, but at times have to use the 'side of the foot' technique that Taspan had taught the band, or my own 'ball of the foot first' method that I had learned back in the Barrens. Either way, it is slow going, but I an patient, I am a Huntress, and can sit for several ahn without moving, waiting for game to come by.

: ...As I make my way, setting one foot carefully in front of the other, I look around with my large, dark brown eyes, seeking signs of passage, either animal or human. I don't expect to see human traces, this is far from the usual area that we patrol, and the men and women of the Cove and Citadel tend to stay in their area, they know that there are Panthers all around them, and no man wants to be 'spear danced'. I grin to myself with frustration, it had been so long since we had had a proper Spear Dance. I did satisfy my sexual needs with a certain man of the Cove, but, it was nothing like a Spear Dance. I stop, and clear my head, and let the warmth that had begun to fill my loins disappear...I need to be alert, and not daydreaming, there is still a lot out here that could harm, or even kill me. The tarsk were very large here, and aggressive, and there were jungle cats that would pounce from branches above a careless walker. I grimace a bit...I share the sentiments of Taspan...why did our Leader bring us here, to the 'Armpit of Gor?' The Forest was much more comfortable, and understandable.

: ...I keep making my way, carefully, along the trail, and note a few smaller game trails that intersect this one. As I reach each one, I stop, and crouch down, my right hand holding my spear, and my left hand gently pushing aside folage, and loam, looking for signs of what had passed though. Mostly, there are clear signs of tarsk, the trotter tracks can't be missed, and bits of fur caught by thorns gave me an idea of how large they were. There are also the much more delicate tracks of the tabuk, and, more rarely, the wide paw marks of a jungle cat. I make mental notes of what I see, I will pass on my observations to Gia. She is training to become a 'Huntress', and taking some of the newer Scouts out here could be a good experience.

: ...I move along the small game trail, often having to bend low to the ground to avoid branches, or at times to crawl under a fallen log. As usual, there are small streams that cross the trail, and I sometimes stop, and take a drink of the fresh, cool water, and wipe my face, arms, and legs. Each time I find a stream, I eagerly look around the banks, hoping to find the type of wood that I am looking for. Each time, I am disappointed, and I wonder where the hell the wood grows. I had seen wooden flutes at the Cove, and the Citadel, and several of the Talunas had wooden flutes. I had been told that the wood was hard to find, but it grew in the Jungle, in wet areas.

: ...I keep making my way along the trail, slowly and carefully, not leaving tracks. The 'stepping techniques' work, but I also cover tracks that I have to leave. When crossing loam, I toss handfuls of rotting folage that I gather from the side of the trail, that is underneath bushes, into the depressions that I had been forced to leave. I had cut a leafy branch from a bush as I had entered the trail, and used it to brush away my prints on bare dirt. It was slow going, but I was patient, I didn't need to be any place special today.

: ...The trail I am following intersects a larger, much more well worn trail. I stay in the smaller one, and stay still, looking up and down the larger trail, blinking my enormous dark brown eyes. After a moment, my brain registers where I am, and I nod with satisfaction. The larger trail is well known to me, but unknown to most. It leads to my waterfall, and very few have seen it, it is a private place, that I regard as sacred, and where my spirit guide lives. I stay in the smaller game trail, and suddenly hear a birdcall that I had never heard before. I stay still, and watch a brightly colored bird swoop by, and land on a branch. He puffs out his chest, and spreads his tail and wings, and repeats the call I had heard. I listen closely, and quietly whistle his call under my breath. I will need to show this to Taspan, and we can decide how to integrate it into the Lairs signal reparatoire. I watch the cock display for a while, and grin...males are so full of themselves...and decide to tease him. I whistle back his call, and see him react, looking around for another cock. I whistle again, as loud as I can, and giggle to myself as he flies away. I emerge from the small game trail, and decide to head towards my waterfall. I will continue looking for wood to replace my flute.
