: There is alot of enthusiasm for redoing all the huts the way we did the Storage Hut yesterday, with the reinforcing beams on the inside, and the double roof, with the original thatched leaf roofs being removed and then replaced over a slanted roof of pitched planks, so that the huts will be strong and dry, but still look dilapidated and abandoned. However, I don't want to invest alot of time, effort and materials until I see how this concept stands up to real rain. Nonetheless, I am persuaded to improve Tasp's hut, Drax's and the one the kajira are staying in, on the basis that the Panthers can share Tasp's hut, and I am already spending every night with Drax anyway.*

: *Our other project for the day was cleaning up our water. We had split into three groups, to work each bank and the stream itself. Mostly we looked for dead stuff that we didn’t want rotting into our water. On the one hand, it’s pretty disgusting work, but if I think about it terms of, “Did I really want this dead tharlarion in my bathtub and drinking water, or is it better to spear it and bury it away from the water?” We also cut some branches that overhang the stream, to cut down on bird and monkey poop, and take down two trees that lean into the stream. It’s not much of a change in the environment, and we are going to need the wood anyway.*

: *We are also foraging for birds’ nests, not to harvest them, but to map them, and figure out what kind of birds we have around here. For one thing, we need a new system of birdcalls that actually matches up with local birds. For another, we want to figure out which birds are better eating, what they eat, and try to cultivate more of that in the area. But more than anything, the birds are the key to understanding the environment. The carrion-eaters can help us keep track of competing predators, the insectivores can help us find beehives and termite nests. I am not sure if I believe in army ants, but if we have them, I want to know. I also hope to spot some fish-eating birds. If we have them, they can alert us to fish runs. And there are also those multicolored tarns to think about. I think we could raise a hatchling on leftovers and carcass-meat, for a couple of months, and get some tasty poultry.*

: *As the sun goes down, on the way back, I am actually hoping for rain. I’d like to test those new roofs, and it will be real easy to float the felled trees downstream after a good storm. Everyone is tired and I don’t think I am the only one who sleeps better in the rain. But I don’t think we will get any tonight, from the look of the sky at sundown.*
