Something that is adaptive for a particular situation can become a habit that persists even when the adaptation isn't needed any longer.
In my soccer playing days, when physically threatened on the field, I'd tense up ready to go in hard. That was a pretty automatic reaction. When encountering a physically threatening boss, I did exactly the same thing - entirely automatic, no backing away. He went ballistic. There was a scene. Automatic adaptive reaction in a situation where it wasn't needed, and wasn't adaptive.
So if you've adapted to dealing with men hitting on you by taking control, that might have been adaptive when you were playing on the het sportsfield, but it's not so adaptive when you've changed teams.
