Oh I so get this one, having had a now ex-friend do exactly the same thing to me.
It did force my hand in coming out at work. And things were bad for some time as a result of some other stuff that she made up at the same time.
In the longer run, I gained a whole lot of respect from colleagues and senior staff for how I handled it. Mostly, they mishandled it themselves until thing got to the point that they realised where the craziness was coming from.
