I recall a thread a while ago where a number of people talked about pretty much the same sort of thing, so I doubt you're alone in this.
I'm inclined to think that it's possibly an adaptation to a situation that you don't really want to be in. And perhaps the adaptation is one that allows you to take a lot of control?
Lots of adaptations are a bit sticky to shake off once you no longer need them, because the situation might not still be there.
