Alcohol handwash! I'd give kissing, hugging, shaking hands a miss, and have lots of handwash around the place for people to use.
I've had it, and I know a LOT of people who've had it. Only one got as sick as your BIL's mom, although she was treated successfully. The rest of us weren't that sick, but were tired and washed out for a long time - 1-2 weeks.
