Laurie's company is very progressive. They've long offered health coverage to domestic partners. We're the first to ask if they're willing to cover the children of domestic partnerships. We're thrilled they've taken the necessary steps with BC/BS to institute this.
We'll still have to pay taxes on the benefit, however, because of DOMA -- unlike married couples.
Having all of our legal paperwork done re: our "domestic partnership" and the kids was KEY in persuading Laurie's company to go to bat for us.
