We, too, have one joint checking account, one savings account etc. We own our house together, and own a rental house together. All of the utilities are in both of our names. We have separate credit cards and joint credit cards, but they're paid from the same joint account. We do not have separate bank accounts at all. We also have numerous legal documents in place: wills, living wills, powers of atty, affidavits, health care powers of atty, guardianship guidelines for the children -- all of which were filed by our atty in our county's Circuit Court. My parents, my brother (our trustee) and a friend of Laurie's also have copies. We are also each other's primary beneficiary on all life insurance policies.
A new development: On Dec. 1, we are all going to be covered as a family under Laurie's health insurer. We're the first for her company -- a major contractor to the Department of Energy. We're very excited about this.
Our atty advises that all of these things together make a very strong case for us, should we have to fight in court. I don't anticipate that, however. Maryland has already passed some piecemeal legislation (no real estate tax penalty for same sex couples, no inheritance tax penalty for same sex couples, full medical access etc.) that comforts us. And if DC's recently introduced bill to recognize same sex marriage passes this winter, well be some of the first in line.
