Sometimes these threads become personal battlegrounds between very strong, opinionated individuals. It is no longer about the topic, but rather how one was offended by something someone else said. I personally like when greater issues of the LGBTQ are discussed, what I don't like is when one is badgered because their world view doesn't quite fit with anothers.
When these discussions devolve to the point where only two or three people are involved, and they are not discussing the topic at hand, but rather how offended they were by another's attitude and ideas, and how they should or shouldn't apologize, or how they need to receive another's opinion without flying off the handle, well it can get tiresome, and it takes up space. Someone reading the thread thinking it's about one thing, often may feel as if they have stepped into someones own private little battle.
That is not a safe feeling for some people.
When opinions are strongly held about the topic at hand, then folks should gear up and get tough, take what they can use and leave the rest. When it becomes a, "he said, she said, I'm so mad, you made me sad" type thing, then it becomes a waste of time, space and energy for folks looking for help and insight.
