He doesn't want to re-hash all of the same type of stories that everyone loves from the original series back in the 80's. Bendis equates that to being a clone or like a "cover band" in music. It's not being original enough for his tastes. He essentially wants to do something unique and different with the character that hasn't been explored yet.
He likes the idea of a mentally-unbalanced character with voices in his head and wanted to write it but this time with other super-hero personalities at play instead of Jake Lockley and Steven Grant.
