I think you overestimate the average movie goer - especially how much they would be able to correctly assume about a comic book hero whom they have very likely never heared of before.
Lets say you do a movie and you base it on a story like 'The Bottom', you cant just dump Moonknight in there - people are going to want to know how he became Moonknight, why he does what he does, what are his powers, why is he called 'Moonknight' of all things, who is the villain he was injured fighting, why is his best mate a gay Frenchman with no legs and so on.
As a comic reader whos been reading Moonknight since Vol1 *I* would be able to watch such a movie , enjoy it and fill in all the gaps Ive just mentioned from my own knowledge and experience, but the vast majority of movie goers have probably never picked up a comic in their lives and so would just be left confused if the Director didnt explain the who's, where's, whats and why's of the character, his enemies, his motivations, his powers and so on.
'The Bottom' as a storyline doesnt explain a great deal about Marc Spector other than the fact that he's fallen on hard times after a serious injury fighting one villain or another. Thats not enough to make a lay-person care about the character.
'The Bottom' *would* make a good sequel in the same way that 'Demon in a Bottle' is likely to be the primary influence of the next Ironman movie, as it is a traditional story of a hero overcoming great adversity, conquering personal demons and rediscovering what motivated him to don the mask and cape in the first place
: people have a hard enough time taking super
: hero movies serious with out them fighting

And here is where you underestimate the average movie-goer. People have NO problem taking super hero movies seriously when they are written well - the success of the Spiderman franchise and X-Films are evidence of the universal appeal of such films. Movie goers dont even have a problem with taking super hero movies when they arent written so well, as shown by the success of the Fantastic 4 franchise and duds like X-Men: Last stand and Spidey 3.
The movie going public did not spend over a billion dollars worldwide watching spidey movies just so that they could come out confused and cynical - they *liked* them!
