I don't think the "Khonsu helped him" part in the intro is suppose to be taken literally. Mostly to keep people guessing. Remember half of the people who read Moon Knight think Kohnsu is real and Marc is super powered. The other half think he's a crazy psychopath.
Its half and half, with a bunch of splintering therories centering near one side of those two spectrums.
BTW, I don't think the covers are Zombie covers...I think its just a deep look into the way that Marc see's the world. Quite twistedly. That was the purpose of the self-portrait.
