Most black characters either have the word black in their name and are complete stereotypes or they have an origin tied to drugs and crime (or both). This probably occured because middle class white kids made up the majority of the readership in yesteryear and those kids grew up to be the writers. A good example of a great introduction of a minority character was Ultimate Falcon. Much better than the "black" Green Lanter or the "black" Captain America and so on. --Previous Message--

I completely agree that minorities in general are under represented in comics. However, I think the answer to this is making more minority charcters, not eliminating gay ones. I also agree that there were other ways to get to the same ends without making Frenchie gay. However, I thought this issue was quite stirring and it really seemed to fit here. I can totally relate to the feeling that Marvel is cranking out gay characters just for shock value (DC too). Making Batgirl a lesbian didn't accomplish much and these things should be rare. However, I think it fits here and just because another solution existed doesn't mean a writer should HAVE to take it. There's no need to dance around such an issue. The fact that you might be opposed to this on a moral basis is fine and I think exploiting it for cheap sales is sad, but I don't think that was the case here.

: I understand that there have been a lot of
: gay
: characters come up in comics lately, but I
: think it works here. Frenchie bieng gay came
: as a shock to Marc and helped drive them
: apart more.
:
: There are other ways to do than instead of
: making someone gay. Huston is a creative
: writer and he could have come up with a
: different way then what is becoming the norm
: for shock in comics these days.
:
:However, Frenchie did nothing
: wrong so Marc feels bad about it. I really
: think it was a good idea.
:
: Frenchie and Marc have had differences
: between the two of them on and off for
: years. Even to the point they disliked each
: other. The two find a way to forgive each
: other's actions and come to terms with each
: other.
:
: As for the new gay
: characters, consider this: When you look at
: the total number of fictional heroes in the
: MU and DCU, homosexuals are still
: statistically underrepresented in comics.
:
: I already mentioned it in a previous post,
: but there is statistically an under
: representation of minority characters in
: comics. How many American Indian characters
: are there? What about Latino characters?
: While Black characters are slightly
: increasing, they are far behind
: statistically. The number of gay/lesbian
: characters are becoming more than that of
: the minority characters.
