It is offensive for you to voice your assumptions on the creators' motives as if they are fact. It is offensive for you to say that they are *only* motivated by shock value and attention grabbing. And it is offensive for you to suggest that is the only possible use a gay character can serve. : - Hulkling Then why didn't they hype the gay characters, if 'attention grabbing' was the only reason they were there? The writer of the book is gay--I'd say that the inclusion of gay characters here has more to do with a) writing what you know, and b) the writer's own interests and/or biases. If the storyline were about shock value and grabbing attention they wouldn't have made it so subtle. : - Electro I didn't say otherwise. I'm just pointing out that you are exagerrating the signficance of that 'outing'. : Skein? Joystick? Swordsman? The writer has said online that this is not the first time Swordsman has engaged in same-sex activity. It is true that the Purple Man incident is a rape situation, but Fabian has still indicated that he considers Swordsman to be a bisexual character. : Joystick It *could* be--but there is still on-panel hints suggesting she is bi, as well as the online comments by the writer.

: A tool to get attention? You point is valid
: enough when it comes to high-profile
: 'outings', like Batwoman, Rawhide Kid or
: Northstar. But you can't honestly expect me
: to believe that making Frenchie gay is a
: sales stunt, considering that it was not
: hyped in any way. How is it a tool to grab
: attention if no one knows about it without
: reading the book first?
:
: A character that has previously shown no
: signs of being gay suddenly outs himself.
: That is a tool.
So you keep saying--but you have yet to explain how it is an 'attention getting tool' when it is not hyped in any way.
: somewhat offensive) assumption to claim that
: attention grabbing is the motive for all of
: these gay characters.
:
: There is nothing offensive about it.
So, yes, your statement IS offensive, on more than one level.
: - Wiccan
:
: I don't think 'attention grabbing' had
: anything to do with this relationship,
: considering that the writer was trying to be
: subtle about the relationship, and didn't
: intend to reveal it until later in the first
: year, but ended up dealing with it sooner
: when readers picked up on it and wrote in.
:
: The first two gay teenage characters in a
: largely hyped title. Of course it had
: something to do with it.
:
: It was a one-page reference to him exploring
: bisexuality, which has never been brought up
: again. Again, I think you're stretching.
:
: It doesn't matter if it was brought up
: again or not. That alone changes the
: character's sexuallity.
:
: Swordsman was forced into it by someone
: else and could count more as rape than a
: sudden sexual preferance change.
: has only given hints and nothing has been
: shown or really proven and it could all just
: be an act.
