If they didn't want both pro and con discussion happening about what they write, then they woudln't be writing it. They did it to get attract attention. Pure and simple. It was used to get people to talk about "I can't believe that ________ is gay", "Did you hear that _______ outed himself in _________ comic", "We have shown the first gay cowboy in entertainment history". It is all being used as a tool. Creating new characters is one thing, but making characters is done just to get attention to the title.
