That attention in turn is what brings readers. It was done with RAWHIDE KID and it was done with YOUNG AVENGERS. It was done with Batwoman at DC. It is being uses as a tool. : Young Avengers if anything has been Young Avengers: created by Young Gun Jim Cheung and TV superstar writer Allan Heinberg (The O.C., Sex in the City, Party of Five). Seems to be a gimmick to me. : Also to my recollection the only people who And yet I continue to read it and still care about the inclusion of a gay character. Just becuase it has a gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or any other type of character in it is not going to turn me away from the comic if I enjoy it. But that doesn't mean I am not going to comment on things I don't like about it. And again, I don't mind there being a gay character in the comic. It is just that this is playing out too much in comics these days. Before the addition of gay/lesbian characters it was "Make a character a Jewish character" for no reason other than something to do. : There is no evidence to my knowledge that It attracts attention, which in turn attracts readers. Case in point: RAWHIDE KID. "Remember Marvel did the gay cowboy first everyone" is what Quesada keeps saying even though Mel Brooks did it years ago in BLAZING SADDLES. It was a tool. : Wiccan and Hulking were well written, well I disagree since it generated discussion for the title enough to get people interested in checking the title out. : Electro? When was it revealed that he was Starting over with a new #1 and giving it the "Marvel Knights" banner are just two marketing tools used to propel it to higher readers and higher issues being sold. So ti was full of gimmicks from the start. : Again, it doesnt appear to me that Electro And it became a discussion all in itself to increase interest in it. Something like Elektro suddenly becoming gay for no reason is used as a tool instead of substantial use in a story. : It may also suprise you that quite a few When he tells a shape-shifting woman/hooker to turn into Spider-Man so they can have sex, means that he has changed since being released from prison. : Bottom line is that I thought Frenchies Never said it would "bring droves of fans". I said it is being used too much as a tool in comics lately. : Anyone who thinks that Frenchie being gay is I have not missed one point about the title at all.

: A tool for what exactly? To attract the
: legions and legions of comic lovers, most of
: whom I suspect are hetrosexual males between
: the ages of 13 and 25? Doesnt fit the
: reading demographic of comics.
: symbolised by the excellence of the writing
: and artwork, and not by any kind of gimmick.
: seem to care a damn about the inclusion of
: homosexual characters in comics are the ones
: who decry and criticise their inclusion in
: the first place and then threaten to throw
: the title down never to read it again.
: Everyone else just says 'fair enough' and
: carries on reading a title that they were
: gonna read anyway, gay characters or not.
: suggests that the inclusion of homosexual
: characters is a successful mass marketing
: tool, and even less when you consider that
: homosexuals themselves are only a very small
: fraction of any mass market. So who exactly
: is this 'tool' supposed to attract?
: characterised and admirable characters in
: that title - their sexuality is irrelevent
: to their success or that of their
: universally excellent book.
: gay? Thats a new one on me.
:
: He has the hots for Spider-Man and learned
: something new about himself while in prison
: from MARVEL KNIGHTS: SPIDER-MAN.
:
: The millar run is another that will always
: be remembered for its general excellence
: rather than any gimmicks.
: making one fairly off the wall comment about
: possibly having gay relations in prison
: would be a very successful tool for selling
: comics.
: inmates engage in same sex relations on the
: inside, but that doesnt make them gay any
: more than a homosexual who has relations
: with the opposite sex because they are
: afraid of the reaction they may recieve if
: they come out.
: revelation was appropriate for the storyline
: and advanced the plot without being
: patronising or tacky.
:
: Bottom line is that we are seeing this far
: too much lately in comics just to get the
: comic noticed for having a gay/lesbian
: character in it.
:
:
: Aw, come on! You really think that ANYONE -
: let alone droves of fans - are going to pick
: up this title because of one gay French guy
: who isnt even the major character? Get real?
: the marketing tool with this excellent title
: hasnt been reading it hard enough and has
: missed the entire point.
