Posted by Cherasa on 12/9/2005, 2:30 pm First of all, I would just like to thank all of you for your tremendous support and GREAT feedback on my designs and questions! The question I have next is one that I think is fairly important, for the comfort of everyone involved with the production. I've been told that a few of the cast members are overweight. I'm assuming she doesn't mean that they are morbidly obese, but weighty enough that the director is concerned for their comfort wearing unitards. Her suggestion was that we buy all the unitards in black, because black hides fat. You can imagine my horrified facial expression at this prospect. Surely she wasn't planning to have solid-coloured cats? I was very glad that I had volunteered to help. I explained to her that once we got all of the markings on, we could do a lot to help mask the appearance of overweight actors and actresses. Part of that would be painting the bibs so that they have an inward curve around the midsection, so that the colours wouldn't bulge outward and increase the appearances of bellies. I also suggested that we make legwarmers come up a little higher, so that these performers would feel more covered. I've had some experience with masking funny bumps in my own costuming experience, but I was often working in the opposite direction -- because I am so underweight, I tend to have to work to make it so that my costume gives the illusion that I have something resembling a figure. Do any of you have suggestions about what I can do to increase the confidence and comfort of overweight cast members in unitards? I have yet to see or measure the cast members she is concerned about, so I don't know HOW overweight I'm actually dealing with.
